Speaker Pelosi's National Energy Tax: More Mandates, More Regulations, More Costs
Posted by Jessica R. Towhey on June 26, 2009

Speaker Pelosi’s national energy tax is going to raise electricity prices, increase gasoline prices, and ship American jobs overseas to countries like China and India.  This, we know.

It would be a bureaucratic nightmare overseen by a confusing web of government agencies that would take and redistribute trillions of dollars from family budgets and workers payrolls.  This, we also know.  Even Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson (D-MN) admitted in the Washington Post this morning that: “The truth is, nobody knows for sure how this is going to work.”  How encouraging.

But what don’t we know?  Here are some facts you may not know about Speaker Pelosi’s national energy tax:

Homebuyers Beware.  Trying to save up for a new home?  You may have to save up a little longer for your purchase.  The Democrats’ bill would dramatically increase new home costs by mandating California’s expensive new building codes for the entire nation.  Immediately upon enactment, the Democrats’ bill would demand a 30 percent increase in energy efficiency for new construction.  A couple of years later, the Democrats’ bill would require an additional 50 percent improvement.  These numbers were chosen with no concern for cost to consumers or feasibility in implementation.

Homebuilders Beware.  The Democrats’ bill imposes new mandatory regulations and civil penalties for homebuilders.  If your state refuses to accept the stringent and costly California building codes, the federal government may assess penalties.  And don’t get too comfortable with the new mandatory regulations because the Democrats’ bill allows for “consensus-based” codes to supplant those outlined in the bill.  So, as soon as you’ve invested your hard-earned money to comply with the bill’s mandates, the rug could get pulled from underneath you.  Translation?  You’ll pony up more and more money.

Home Sellers Beware.  Having a hard time selling your home?  Here’s one more hurdle to jump:  all homes sales are conditioned upon an energy audit and a new energy rating assessment and energy labeling program for your home that’s outlined in the Democrats’ bill.  And if you thought you could improve your property with a fresh coat of paint and some granite counters?  Think again!  Now your home will be subjected to a new energy rating assessment and energy labeling program that will penalize you for older windows, original fixtures, and dated appliances.  So the Democrats’ bill would bring down the value of your home!

New Lights No Matter the Cost.  As early as 2012, the Democrats’ bill eliminates all existing lighting technology used in many outdoor lighting fleets (parking lots, stadiums, secured facilities like power plants and factories).  Just as an example, switching to the mandated technology in the bill will cost one small utility about $30 million in annual revenue.  So you now have to comply with the new mandates for new lighting?  Hold the phone.  It is not clear that a feasible alternative technology is available for every existing lighting application – regardless of cost – which could force some businesses to close.

The consequences of Speaker Pelosi’s national energy tax for families and small businesses are real.  It will drive up energy costs, send millions of jobs to countries like China and India, and place an especially heavy burden on rural America.  There is a better way.  House Republicans have proposed the American Energy Act, legislation that represents the fastest route to a cleaner environment, lower energy costs, and more American jobs.  The legislation would:

  • Increase environmentally-safe energy production on remote lands and far off our shores;
  • Promote the use of alternative fuels that will reduce carbon emissions, such as nuclear, clean-coal, and renewable energy technologies; and
  • Encourage increased efficiencies and cutting edge technologies to maximize America’s energy potential.

Today’s vote on Speaker Pelosi’s ill-advised national energy tax will have consequences for every American.  It is a bad deal for America.  And the American people will remember how their Members of Congress vote.

Thank you for bringing attention to all the hidden taxes and costs in this bill....which in and of itself is just one, big, gigantic tax. Sheryl Savannah, GA

Congressman Boehner, You did a great job last week in framing this issue. I believe the Speaker had one thing right. June 26 will be long remembered..... As the Gettysburg of the marxists, their high tide. Keep up the good work!

Thank you for bringing this information to our attention. Unfortunately I don't live in your district and would be unaware what's tucked away in ths Cap and Trade legislation if it werent for you. My congressman here in Tennessee voted for this job-killing bill. I am in the real estate business and I see now how this legislation will not only effect energy prices, but will severely damage an already ailing home sales market nationwide. It's amazing how little the details of this bill is mentioned by the main stream media. I'm a (new) Realtor, that has worked in various ends of the housing industry for the past 20 years, from title insurance researcher to retail paint & decorating store owner, to designer specializing in paint color and window treatments. We have been through the "Wal-Marts" and "Home Depots" coming into our small communities and changing the way businesses compete. This "Cap & Trade" bill is by far worse for the industry than the free market-' large competitors' have been for the small business owner. (I actually appreciate the large stores). This bill is setting standards that are taking away choices and are extremely expensive for anyone making less than $250,000.00 per year. As a designer (still in this line of work), I see problems beyond the scope of what you hear on the surface. The majority of people we work with prepare for the day they can sell their home. They do not need to worry about appliances being up-to-date, or windows meeting requirements- because it is a choice. The homeowners put their money into painting, needed repairs, and mowing their lawns(with gas powered mowers), to present their homes on the market. If they have to meet other standards - not by choice- they would not be able to sell when they want or need to. Also, as a professional color consultant, the lightbulbs used make a world of difference in the rooms they are in, and affect the feel & MOOD of the room. If people had depression in the winter before- wait until everyone changes to the florescent bulbs. These bulbs are the worst bulbs for the true lively feel that a room should have. Not only will people be depressed because of the economy and energy bills, they will also have depressing feeling rooms they once felt good in.(This is my personal, professional color consultant, viewpoint after working with customers in these rooms.)

This bill would take away opportunity for the common people to buy a home that they could afford, and fix it up as they can afford to do so, as we did when we were young and financially unable to start out paying a large loan. This is a job killing bill, it is an incentive killing bill. Look at the financial trouble California is in. Is that where this government wants this country to end up. It sure appears to be the case since they are trying to adopt many of the same regulations. The country is being taken over by the government, and the people are angry. We want our country back, we want it out of the hands of government.

This bill along with the supposed stimulus package is pushing this once free government away from democracy and closer to a communist/socialist government. Last I checked, during the war for independance Americans died so that the peoe could have control of the government and so far within less than a year this president and his supporters have managed to destroy what they did. It is making the deaths of our founding fathers worthless. The stimulus package was the first step in government controlled businesses (the basis of socialism). We basically set aside money specifically for the government to use to "buy out" companies under the false idea of trying to help them. Look at GMC if you want a good example. This bill is the first step to invading our homes. We will no longer have the rights or the freedom to own the home we want or sell it later on without "asking for permission.". We are not children, so why are we being treated as such?

Dear Rep. Boehner, This evening's conduct by Rep. Joe Wilson was disrespectful, possibly setting a precedent for future disrespect of the office of the president. I noted a huge angry response on the Internet regarding Rep. Wilson's outburst, including angry residents of South Carolina. I went to Rep. Wilson's government website, and it was "down for maintenance." Is it possible that the angry influx of email may have caused the website to go down? Rep. Wilson's outburst of "You lie," in the middle of a congressional speech is the icing on the cake for me. I switched to the Democratic party last year due to the mean spiritedness of the Republican Party--and I am glad that I did. Please stop supporting bad Republican behavior in the attempt to save Republican face. Sincerely, Sandra Spargo Washington State

Rep. Boehner said: "I'm still trying to find the first American who's in favor of the public option, other than a member of Congress or the administration." I wanted him to know that his search is over - I am in favor of the public option. Thank you! S. Goddard

I'm one of those people who you don't think exists who is for the public option. It is the only way to control the spiraling cost of health care. I wonder, Congressman Boehner, if you and your family did not have an excellent, government-run health plan, if you would be so opposed to making one available.
  • Ellen Richards commented on 10/7/2009
OK, let's try this again. I am FOR the Public Option. So, now you can stop saying you haven't found One American who's for it. There are 70% of us. Please.

"I'm still trying to find the first American who's in favor of the public option, other than a member of Congress or the administration." -- House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH), quoted by the Middletown Journal. In response to the Minority Leader... I'm not a member of Congress or the Administration and I not only support the Public Option, I support pegging it to Medicare rates +5%.
  • Kimberly Kaeser commented on 10/7/2009
I want the PUBLIC OPTION - I am an ordinary citizen!
  • Terry Oelschlaeger commented on 10/7/2009
John, I am an American and I support the public option. Please amend your comments now that I have come forward.

Rep. Boehner said: "I'm still trying to find the first American who's in favor of the public option, other than a member of Congress or the administration." I'm an American. My family fought the British at Fort Ticonderoga. I'm in favor of the Public Option. How about a little compromise? Please?

Rep. Boehner said: "I'm still trying to find the first American who's in favor of the public option, other than a member of Congress or the administration." I wanted him to know that his search is over - I am in favor of the public option. I actually would far prefer single payer, however. Also: * Voters disapprove 64% to 25% of the way Republicans in Congress are doing their job, with even 42% of Republican voters disapproving * Only 29% think Republicans on Capitol Hill are acting in good faith * Voters trust Obama more than Republicans 47% to 31% to handle health care * By a 53% to 25% margin, voters have an unfavorable opinion of the Republican Party

Perhaps you should check politifact.com since you seem to be unaware of the truth about this bill. You should be ashamed of yourself for misleading and downright lying to people naive enough to trust you.
